Swim Lessons

At the Y, swimming is a life skill. Our swim lessons prepare kids of all ages to stay safe and have fun in the water, building strong and confident kids. Listed below are the descriptions for our new lesson stages and their corresponding previous lesson. Please work with us as we make the change to a better, more kid and parent friendly swim lesson program. Starters

Member $41, Non-Member $58
In this program, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim-readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents learn about water safety and the importance of supervision.
Stage A-Water Discovery (6 mo – 3 yr.) – approx. Shrimp class Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Thursday – 6:00-6:45 p.m.
Stage B-Water Exploration (2-4 yr.) – approx. Perch class Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. Wednesday – 6:00-6:45 p.m.

Basics

Member $46, Non-member $73
Ages 3-5 (preschool-PS), 5-12 (school age–SA), 13+ (teen & adult–A)
In this program, swimmers learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills, “swim-float-swim” and “jump-push-turn-grab”, which are recommended skills for all to have around water.
Stage 1-Water Acclimation (PS & SA) Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. Not available at this time.
Stage 2-Water Movement (PS & SA) – approx. old Pike or Polliwog class Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills, performed independently. Tuesday – PS 4:30-5:15 p.m., PS & SA 5:15-6:00 p.m., SA 6:00-6:45 p.m. Thursday – PS & SA 4:30-5:15 p.m., PS & SA 5:15-6:00 p.m.
Stage 3-Water Stamina (PS & SA) – approx. old Eel or Guppy class Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages. Tuesday – PS 4:30-5:15 p.m., SA 5:15-6:00 p.m. Thursday – PS & SA 4:30-5:15 p.m., SA 5:15-6:00 p.m.
Stage 1-3 (A) Similar class instruction as listed above. Tuesday – 6:00-6:45 p.m.

Swim Strokes

Member $46, Non-member $73
Ages 3-5 (preschool-PS), 5-12 (school age–SA), 13+ (teen & adult–A)
Having mastered the fundamentals, swimmers learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique and endurance – skills to support a healthy lifestyle.
Stage 4-Stroke Introduction (PS & SA) – approx. old Starfish or Minnow Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Tuesday – PS 5:15-6:00 p.m. Thursday – SA 5:15-6:00 p.m.
Stage 5-Stroke Development (SA) Introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke.
Stage 6-Stroke Mechanics (SA) – approx. old Pre-Team Class Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle. Tuesday – 6:00-6:45 p.m.
Stages 4-6 (A) Similar class instruction as listed above. Tuesday – 6:00-6:45 p.m.

Important Participant Information:

• All swim lesson sessions are eight (8) weeks.
• Please come to the first, sixth, and last swim lesson with your swimmer regardless of their age so that we can pass along information to you the parent rather than to the swimmer.
• All children under the age of six must have a parent drop them off and pick them up in the ramp area. We cannot let preschoolers go unattended into the locker room.
• Please shower thoroughly before using the pool.
• Participants should wear lined swim suits. Gymnastics leotards, basketball shorts, and other cotton clothing garments worn as street clothing should not be worn in the pool as swimwear. Religious swimwear is allowed as long as it is made of swim suit material.
• Our staff cannot take children to the restroom during lessons.
• For safety reasons, we do not allow parents to remain on the deck or in the ramp during lessons. Viewing is available upstairs in the balcony or in the glassed-in viewing area.
• Parents may return to the ramp to watch their child when the toys are brought out.
• Fees will not be refunded or credited once a class has met for the second week of a session. Prorated fees will be given as a credit for illness or injury with a note from a physician.
• We do close the pool for thunder or lightning storms or other inclement weather. We will attempt to make-up classes in those cases, but credits may be applied for future programs instead.
• Classes missed due to personal reasons will not be made up because it compromises the safety ratio in other classes.
• We do not make up missed holiday lessons. Sessions with holidays will have prorated fees.

Pathways

Ages 5-13+
Students build confidence, cultivate their passion, and stay active through specialized tracks.
Competition: Winter and Summer Danville YMCA Dolphins Swim Team – currently in session for the winter team and not accepting new swimmers at this time, but the summer session will start the last week in May and run through the end of July. The winter swim team starts the end of September and runs through mid-March.
Leadership: Lifeguarding Course – lifeguarding courses will start in March and run through the end of May as everyone gears up for their summer jobs. We are always looking for responsible people ages 16+ who want to make an impact in their community by becoming a lifeguard. Swim Instructor – swim instructor courses will be available starting soon. If you are interested in becoming a swim instructor, we are still taking on applicants to shadow current instructors, sub, and teach private lessons.
Recreation: We are looking for some great volunteers with great skills that could bring them to our Y! Scuba, water polo, synchronized swimming – the “pool’s” the limit.
